Threads to New Worlds: A Collection of Fiber Arts is a new travelling exhibit by the Weaving Guilds of Oregon (WeGO). This juried show features traditional flat textiles like rugs and tapestries as well as three dimensional pieces, including an incredible basket and bouquet of flowers woven out of paper by Emma Lou Scherf of the Eugene Weavers Guild.
Each of the thirty pieces in the exhibit were exquisitely crafted by talented Oregonian weavers using a wide variety of materials, structures, and techniques. The various projects include a doubleweave pick-up scarf with optical illusions, kumihimo necklaces, a krokbragd rug, and a woven pillow made from handspun yarn and embellished with handmade bobbin lace.
The exhibit will travel to various galleries in Oregon throughout the year, but for now it’s at Klamath Art Gallery in Klamath Falls through July 28. After that it will move on to a new town and a new gallery. More information on the current showing of the exhibit can he found at the Klamath Art Gallery’s website.
Of course, if you can't make it to any of the showing in Oregon, there are some incredible photos taken by photographer Shelly Schmidt that can be viewed on her website. Just a warning, after seeing the photos of these works of woven art, you might just be tempted to travel to Oregon and see the pieces in person.
